How to Choose IFB23, IFB26, IFB28 and IFB30 Insulating Fire Bricks

For refractory distributors, choosing the right insulating fire brick grade is not only about the maximum service temperature. The final selection should also consider furnace structure, hot-face or backup use, thermal cycling, mechanical loading, standard size availability and customer price expectations.

Start with working temperature

IFB23 is commonly used for lower-temperature kiln zones and backup insulation. IFB26 is a balanced grade for many ceramic kilns and industrial furnaces. IFB28 gives a higher temperature margin for hot-face backup and demanding kiln areas. IFB30 is selected when the project requires higher heat duty and better thermal stability.

Consider hot-face or backup insulation

A brick used as direct hot-face lining faces more thermal stress than a brick used behind dense refractory lining. When the brick will be directly exposed to flame, atmosphere or frequent heating and cooling, distributors should confirm the application before recommending a grade.

Check strength and dimensions

Low thermal conductivity is important, but the brick must also handle handling, installation and service conditions. Ask the buyer for dimensions, quantity, furnace drawing and application. Custom machined shapes can reduce installation work when the kiln or furnace design is already fixed.

Distributor checklist

  • Working temperature and safety margin
  • Hot-face lining or backup insulation
  • Standard size or custom machined size
  • Quantity, packing method and destination port
  • Private label or neutral packaging requirements
